Operating System Upgrades in Mission Viejo

Overtime, operating systems become obsolete. This doesn’t mean the operating system will come to a screeching halt and stop working all together; however, it does mean that the operating system will stop receiving critical windows updates, patches, and security/vulnerability fixes. This can be a daunting reality for the majority of our clients, especially if they are familiar or accustomed to their current operating system. While we try to help clients understand their “new” operating system, it is also important that we train them on new features, functions, but most importantly, new security components of their operating system.

Operating System Updates

In most cases, we are able to upgrade the operating system from (for example) Windows 7 to Windows 10. While this would “appear” to be a seamless transition, there is actually a quite a bit of prep-work required to make the transition. For instance, we ALWAYS will take a backup of the current operating system, file structure, and windows environment before we attempt an upgrade. In some cases, an upgrade can fail, leaving the user without their data, a working operating system, and a non-functioning machine. With that being said, the professionals at MV Computers will ensure that all of your data is “safe” prior to attempting an upgrade.

Installing the latest Operating System

While the upgrade feature is a “neat” component to the problem of upgrading or transitioning to new operating systems, our team prefers and, in most cases, highly recommends doing a “clean” or “fresh” install of the operating system to the most current build. For instance, if you were on Windows 7 and looking to “upgrade” to Windows 10 — we would typically recommend replacing the hard-drive in your machine (if the machine’s specs were still within industry standards) and from there, installing the operating system on the newly installed drive. After the operating system was installed with the latest and greatest version of Windows, we would transfer the data from the previous drive over to the new drive. That way you have a copy of your original data, the new machine has a copy of the data, and we do not risk data corruption by “upgrading” on an “active” drive.
