Over time your hard drive can experience fragmentation, corruption, or general wear and tear. Our professionals at MV Computers can provide the appropriate tuning for your hard-drive and operating system to ensure that it is running optimally and that you do not experience and potential slow-down or downtime due to failure.
We first begin our process taking a look at the overall health of the hard drive. This is generally performed by checking the S.M.A.R.T. of the drive and confirming that none of the values are outside of their normal range. This system provides an overall benchmark to the health of the drive relative to other drives and allows us to see if there is anything going on in the drives operation that may be indicative of a hard-drive failure.
Second, we check overall fragmentation levels of the drive to make sure that they are within normal ranges. Fragmentation level can easily be identified with either the built-in fragmentation utility provided by windows or via 3rd party software (which our technicians will recommend and show you how to utilize to keep your machine running optimally). The easiest way to think about fragmentation level is the higher the level, the more potential failure your drive may experience. Over-time as files are deleted, moved, replaced, and copied, the data is over-written over and over again. This consistent writing of data over the same areas creates fragmentation or areas that cannot be utilized until cleaned and re-categorized as available for writing on. If your drive is fragmented, rest assured we will identify this and make the appropriate corrections during your visit.
